حياته
ولد باسم تشارلز هنري فالنتين موارنج كان واحد من ستة ابناء يهود كلهم صاروا موسيقين وكان الكان طفلا موهوبا ووضع اول الحانه للبيانو الذي نشرها في سن 14. اثناء شبابه كان صديقا مقربا لشوبان وليست لكن بمرور الوقت صار معتزل ودائما كان يختفي لمدد طويلة. ظهوره في الحفلات الموسيقية قبل 1873 كان قليلا ورغم انها رسخت مكانته كعازف بيانو ماهر فضل عدم عزف اعماله الخاصة. موسيقاه أصلية ولامعة وعادة متطلبة بشدة اعماله مصنف رقم 39 تشمل سمفونية وكونشرتو لكن دونت للنوتة لبيانو دون مصاحبة.
