- January 20 - Viceroy Martín Enríquez de Almanza founds the settlement of León, Guanajuato, in New Spain (modern-day Mexico).
- 25 يناير - Portuguese explorer Paulo Dias de Novais founds the settlement of São Paulo da Assumpção de Loanda on the south western coast of Africa, which becomes Luanda.[1]

Abd el-Malik, uncle of the Saadian emir Mohammed el-Mottouakil , a refugee in Constantinople , leads an expedition against Morocco with the help of the Turks. El-Mottouakil is defeated and takes refuge in Spain . Abd el-Malik organizes Morocco which he endows with a powerful army. He entered into contact with France , England and Spain . The friendly relations he established with Philip II of Spain forced El-Mottouakil to win thePortugal , where he convinces King Sebastian to invade Morocco.

- May 5 - The Edict of Beaulieu or Peace of Monsieur (after "Monsieur", the Duke of Anjou, brother of the King, Henry III of France, who negotiated it) ends the Fifth War of Religion in France. Protestants are again granted freedom of worship.

- November 4 - Eighty Years' War - Sack of Antwerp: In the Low Countries, mutinous Spanish soldiers sack Antwerp; after three days the city is nearly destroyed.
