تاريخ إسرائيل

إسرائيل أو أرض إسرائيل (بالإنجليزية والفرنسية: Israel ؛ باليونانية: Ισραήλ ؛ باللاتينية :Izrael؛ بالعبرية : ישראל حسب السياق). هي منطقة تاريخية في قلب الشرق الأوسط، وجزء طبيعي من الهلال الخصيب حيث تشكل الجزء الجنوبي الغربي من بلاد الشام، وهي محاطة اليوم ببلدان عربية وكذلك جزء من سكانها من الناطقين بالعربية. أما الجزء الآخر من سكانها هم من الناطقين بالعبرية وأتباع الشعب اليهود وأبناء شعوب أخرى. تقع شرق البحر الأبيض المتوسط وتصل بين غربي آسيا وشمالي أفريقيا بوقوعها، وشبه جزيرة سيناء، عند نقطة التقاء القارتين.

وتحتوي هذه المنطقة على عدد كبير من المدن الهامة تاريخياً ودينياً بالنسبة لأبناء شعب إسرائيل ولديانات التوحيدية الثلاث، وعلى رأسها يروشلايم وحبرون وبيت لحم والناصرة وأريحا وطبريا. تمتلك المنطقة أرضاً متنوّعة جداً، وتقسم جغرافياً إلى أربع مناطق، وهي من الغرب إلى الشرق السهل الساحلي، التلال، الجبال (جبال الجليل، جبال نابلس، جبال القدس ووجبال حبرون) والأغوار (غور الأردن). في أقصى الجنوب هناك صحراء النقب. بين جبال شخيم وجبال الجليل يقع مرج بن عامر ويقطع جبل الكرمل، الذي يمتد من جبال شخيم شمالا غربا، السهل الساحلي. تتراوح الارتفاعات من 417 متراً تحت مستوى البحر في البحر الميت (وهي أخفض نقطة على سطح اليابسة في العالم) إلى 1204 متراً فوق مستوى البحر في قمة جبل ميرون.

ورد اسم إسرائيل كمنطقة جغرافية في الكتاب المقدس العبري عدة مرات نذكر منها على سبيل المثال لا الحصر :

"فلم يتبق عناقيون في أرض بني إسرائيل، لكن بقوا في غزة وجت وأشدود; فأخذ يشوع كل الأرض حسب كل ما كلم به الرب موسى، وأعطاها يشوع ملكا لإسرائيل حسب فرقهم وأسباطهم. واستراحت الأرض من الحرب" (سفر يشوع الفصل الحادي عشر: 22)

"لذلك قل: هكذا قال السيد الرب: إني أجمعكم من بين الشعوب، وأحشركم من الأراضي التي تبددتم فيها، وأعطيكم أرض إسرائيل" (سفر حزقيال الفصل الحادي عشر: 17)
