يرجع وجود المسيحية في مصر إلى أواخر القرن الأول الميلادي. ويمثل المسيحيون حوالي 10-20% من سكان مصر البالغ عددهم أكثر من 80 مليون مصري,[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11] على الرغم من اختلاف التقديرات (انظر الدين في مصر).

ويتبع 95% من المسيحيين المصريين الكنيسة القبطية الأرثوذكسية بالإسكندرية[8][9][12] الكنيسة الشرقية الأرثوذكسية.. وتشكل الكنيسة القبطية أكبر طائفة مسيحية في الشرق الأوسط[13] ويبلغ أتباعها حوالي 10 15 مليون في مختلف أنحاء العالم. وتقع الكنائس الشقيقة لها في أرمنيا, إثيوپيا, إرتريا, الهند, لبنان وسوريا.

يتبع أكثر من 90% من المسيحيين المصريين الكنيسة القبطية الأرثوذكسية بالإسكندرية.[12][20], والتي يرأسها بابا الكنيسة القبطية الأرثوذكسية وبطريرك الكرازة المرقسية, الحالي البابا شنودة الثالث.
