هالدان كفر هارتلاينHARTLINE ولد في 22 ديسمبر عام 1903م هو عالم فيزيائي حائز على جائزة نوبل في الطب لعام 1967، (مع جورج والد وراگنار گرانيت) عن تحليله لكيفية تقييم الخلايا الحسية في شبكية العين حث الضوء. وفي مطلع حياته العملية، درس أيض الخلايا العصبية وبمرور الوقت انتهى به الأمر لدراسة الخلايا المفردة في شبكية العين. وقد استخدم أقطاب كهربائية متناهية الصغر لعزل الألياف المفردة في عيون سرطان البحر حدوي الشكل والضفادع. وقد تعلم كيف أن توليد نبضة في الخلايا الحسية تنقل شفرة إستجابةً لإضاءة بدرجة شدة وفترة مختلفتين. وقد أمضى نحو نصف قرن يطور فهمنا للفسيولوجيا العصبية للإبصار.
Hartline began his study of retinal electrophysiology as a National Research Council Fellow at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, receiving his M.D. in 1927. After attending the universities of Leipzig and Munich as an Eldridge Johnson traveling research scholar, he became professor of biophysics and chairman of the department at Johns Hopkins in 1949. One of Hartline's graduate students at Johns Hopkins, Paul Greengard, later also won the Nobel Prize. Hartline joined the staff of Rockefeller University, New York City, in 1953 as professor of neurophysiology.
