تشاناكيا (IAST: Cāṇakya؛ النطق ؛ ازدهر حوالي القرن الرابع ق.م.[1]) كان معلماً وفيلسوفاً واقتصادياً ومشرعاً ومستشاراً ملكياً هندياً. ويشار إليه تقليدياً بأحد الإسمين كاوتيليا أو ڤشنوگوپتا، وقد ألـّف العمل السياسي الهندي الشهير، أرتاشاسترا.[2] ولذلك يُعتبر رائد مجال العلوم السياسية والاقتصاد في الهند، ويـُرى عمله كسابقة هامة للاقتصاد الكلاسيكي.[3][4][5][6] وقد فـُقـِدت أعماله قرب نهاية امبراطورية گوپتا ولم يعاد اكتشافها حتى مطلع القرن العشرين.[4]
ساعد تشاناكيا أول أباطرة موريا، تشاندراگوپتا في الصعود للسلطة. ويُنسب إليه، على نطاق واسع، فضل كبير في تأسيس امبراطورية موريا. وقد عمل تشاناكيا ككبير المستشارين للامبراطورين تشاندراگوپتا وإبنه بندوسارا.

There is little purely historical information about Chanakya: most of it comes from semi-legendary accounts. Thomas Trautmann identifies four distinct accounts of the ancient Chanakya-Chandragupta katha (legend):[7]

In all the four versions, Chanakya feels insulted by the Nanda king, and vows to destroy him. After dethroning the Nandas, he installs Chandragupta as the new king.

Two books are attributed to Chanakya: Arthashastra and Chanakya Niti, also known as Chanakya Neeti-shastra.[8]
The Arthashastra discusses monetary and fiscal policies, welfare, international relations, and war strategies in detail. The text also outlines the duties of a ruler.[9] Some scholars believe that Arthashastra is actually a compilation of a number of earlier texts written by various authors, and Chanakya might have been one of these authors (see above).[7]
Chanakya Niti is a collection of aphorisms, said to be selected by Chanakya from the various shastras.[8]
