معركة أبو حامد وقعت في 7 أغسطس 1897 بين رتل طائر من الجنود مصري-إنگليزي تحت قيادة الميجور جنرال سير أرشيبالد هنتر وحامية من المتمرديين المهدية تحت قيادة محمد زين. كانت المعركة انتصاراً للقوات المصرية الإنگليزية، وأمنت للبريطانيين بلدة أبو حامد الحيوية استراتيجياً، التي كانت محطة للتجارة والنقل عبر الصحراء النوبية.

كانت أبو حامد ذات أهمية بالغة للورد كتشنر، قائد الحملة المصرية-البريطانية التي بدأت في مارس 1896 بهدف تدمير الدولة المهدية التي احتلت معظم السودان منذ اندلاع التمرد عام 1881. كانت البلدة بداية خط السكك الحديدية لإمدادات اللورد كتشنر عبر الصحراء النوبية الشاسعة القاحلة، مما يسمح لقوات التجريدة بتجاوز الامتداد الهائل لنهر النيل في طريقهم لأم درمان، عاصمة الدولة المهدية. إلا أن البلدة قد استولت عليها القوات المهدية، حيث أنه لن يمكن لهم المضي قدماً دون تدمير إنشاءات خط السكك الحديدية الصحراوي.
