جون گلن
جون هرشل گلِن John Herschel Glenn Jr. (18 يوليو 1921 - 8 ديسمبر 2016) كان طيارًا سابقًا في قوات مشاة البحرية الولايات المتحدة ورائد فضاء وعضوًا في مجلس الشيوخ الأمريكي. وكان أول أمريكي يدور في مدار حول الأرض، وثالث رائد فضاء أمريكي يحلق في الفضاء. كما كان غلين طيارًا حربيًا في قوات المشاة البحرية، وأحد أفراد مركيوري سڤن، الذين كانوا من أمهر طياري الاختبارات العسكريين. وقد تم اختيارهم من قبل الإدارة الوطنية للملاحة الفضائية والفضاء (ناسا) لتشغيل المركبة الفضائية ميركوري التجريبية. ليدخل بذلك ضمن قائمة رواد الفضاء الأمريكان الأوائل. وتولى گلن قيادة المركبة الفضائية فرندشب 7 (Friendship 7 ) في 20 فبراير عام 1962. ولكن شهد عام 1965 تقاعده من العمل العسكري، واستقالته من وكالة ناسا؛ حتى يتمكن من خوض الانتخابات والترشح لمنصب عام. وقد رشحه الحزب الديمقراطي - بوصفه أحد أعضائه- في انتخابات مجلس الشيوخ الأمريكي، وفاز گلن بتمثيل ولاية أوهايو من عام 1974 حتى 1999.
تقلد گلن ميدالية الكونگرس للفضاء عام 1978، وحصل على وسام الحرية الرئاسي عام 2012، وأُدرج اسمه في قاعة مشاهير رواد الفضاء عام 1990. وعن عمر يناهز السبعة وسبعين عامًا، عاد غلين في 29 أكتوبر 1998 إلى ريادة الفضاء مرة أخرى لينضم إلى طاقم رحلة مكوك ديسكفري (STS-95)؛ ليصبح بذلك أكبر شخص يجوب الفضاء. كما يُعتبر الشخص الوحيد الذي شارك في برنامج مركيوري وبرامج مكوك الفضاء. يشار إلى أنه لم يبق من أعضاء مركيوري السبعة سوى گلن وسكوت كارپنتر، فهما آخر اثنين على قيد الحياة.

Glenn was one of the five U.S. senators caught up in the Lincoln Savings and Keating Five Scandal after accepting a $200,000 contribution from Charles Keating. Glenn and Republican senator John McCain were the only senators exonerated.

Glenn returned to space on the Space Shuttle on October 29, 1998, as a Payload Specialist on Discovery's STS-95 mission, becoming, at age 77, the oldest person to go into space. According to The New York Times, Glenn "won his seat on the Shuttle flight by lobbying NASA for two years to fly as a human guinea pig for geriatric studies", which were named as the main reasons for his participation in the mission.[3] Glenn states in his memoir that he had no idea NASA was willing to send him back into space when NASA announced the decision.[4]
