أصل الاسم

It comes from Berber and its meaning would be the son of taglab (Arab lineage). The Berber tribes that inhabited the area were divided into large families, and each of them gave the name of their lineage to the village. Another interpretation is that Benitagla comes from beni-tai-a which means cut from the mountain.

التاريخ

Benitagla was founded by the descendants of the Berber tribes of Al Andalus who settled in the Sierra de los Filabres . The first reference to Benitagla is due to the book Descripcion del Reino de Granada (1782) by Francisco Javier Simonet , which explains that some Castilian chroniclers of the time give news of many localities that preserve the Arabic place-name, among them Banu Tablab, Benitagla in the present.

The territory of Benitagla is taken in 1488 during the War of Granada , being in the list of places taken after the capitulation of Vera in 1488. The I Duke of Nájera , Pedro Manrique de Lara , receives from the Catholic Monarchs on June 23, 1492 the towns of Albox , Arboleas , Albanchez and Benitagla. These are bought in 1495 by Juan Chacón , Castilla's chief accountant , for 800,000 maravedíes , according to file 2,078 of the Ducal archive of Medina Sidonia. The letter of sale is dated in Madrid. The sale is confirmed by the Catholic Monarchsin a privilege dated in Ocaña on March 6, 1499. When Don Juan Chacon died in 1503, Oria and the towns of Albox , Arboleas , Albanchez and Benitagla passed to his second wife Doña Inés Manrique, in payment of her dowry or as community property and in 1515 they were bought by Don Pedro Fajardo y Chacón , son of Juan Chacón and I Marqués de los Vélez . The rebellion of the Alpujarras of 1568 and the subsequent expulsion of the Moors meant that Benitagla, like the rest of the towns, was practically depopulated because all its inhabitants were Moorish.
