أخيل (باليونانية القديمة: Ἀχιλλεύς) (Akeles) ، هو أحد الأبطال الأسطوريين في الميثولوجيا الإغريقية، كان له دور كبير في حرب طروادة ، والتي دارت أحداثها بين الإغريق و أهل طروادة. يروي هوميروس بعض الأحداث ًمن قصة أخيل في الإلياذة.

حسب الأسطورة، كان أخيل ابنا لـ"بيلوس"، ملك ميرميدون، أمه "ثيتس" كانت من الحوريات. وحسب الكتابات الإغريقية القديمة، وحتى يصبح من الخالدين (غير الهالكين)، قامت أمه بغمره في مياه نهر سيتكس، إلا أنها وحين غمرته كانت ممسكة بعقبه من الوتر ، فكان هذا المكان الوحيد في جسمه الذي لم يغمره الماء، وأصبح ذلك نقطة ضعفه. تنبأ أحد العرافين للملك وزوجته أن ابنهما سيقتل في معركة طروادة. حاول بيلوس وزوجته أن يخفيا أخيل، ألبساه ثياب الفتيات، ثم أرسلاه إلى لوكوميدس، ملك جزيرة سيكاروس، ليعيش معه في قصره كأحدى بناته.

οὐλομένην, ἣ μυρί' Ἀχαιοῖς ἄλγε' ἔθηκεν,
اصدحي، يا إلهتي، بغضب ابن پليوس، أخيل
الغضب اللعين، الذي جلب الشقاء لآلاف الآخيين.

قامت الحرب بين أهل طروادة والإغريق، وفشل الإغريق أول الأمر في الإستيلاء على المدينة، ولما علموا بأن أخيل هو الذي سيحقق لهم النصر حسب نبوءة أحد الكهنة، قاموا بالبحث عنه حتى وجدوه. واستطاع الداهية أوديسيوس أن يعثر على أخيل وعرض عليه الأسلحة والخيول فتحرك نفس أخيل لها، وانضم إلى جيش الإغريق.

استطاع أخيل أن يحقق انتصارات باهرة لجيش أجاممنون طوال تسع سنوات من الحرب الضروس. بعد إحدى المعارك، وضع أجاممنون يده على كريسيس بنت ملك طروادة، ورفض أن يعيدها لوالدها. احتدم الخلاف بينه وبين أخيل. قام أخيل باعتزال الحرب، ثم بدأت الهزائم تتوالى على جيش الإغريق.

عندما رأى پاتركلس (صديق أخيل) هزائم قومه، حاول أن يدفع أخيل للقتال مرة أخرى، ولكن أخيل رفض ذلك، فطلب پاتركلس من صديقه أن يعطيه سلاحه ومركبته حتى يرعب بها الأعداء فوافق أخيل على ذلك. وفي المعركة قام هكتور ابن ملك طروادة بقتل باتروكس ظانا أنه قتل أخيل نفسه. ولما علم أخيل بقتل أعز أصدقائه صمم على الانتقام من هكتور. استطاع أن يلحق الهزيمة بالطرواديين وأن يقتل هكتور. إلا أنه وفي النهاية قام باريس أخو هكتور بتصويب سهمه نحو وتر أخيل فمزقه فسقط أرضا، ثم تمكن باريس من أن يجهز عليه.
