النمس المصري (Herpestidae) هو أحد أنواع السموريات البالغ عددها 33 نوعاً، من آكلات اللحوم الصغيرة من جنوب أوراسيا والبر الرئيسى الأفريقى.وأربعة أنواع إضافية من مدغشقر من الفصيلة الفرعية Galidiinae التى صنفت سابقا في هذه العائلة, هنا أيضا كثيرا ما يشار اليهم باسم "النموس". تشير الأدلة الوراثية أن Galidiinae أكثر ارتباطا بآكلات اللحوم carnivorans في مدغشقر. الفصائل الأخرى في تلك الأسرة Eupleridae , وهى تعد أفرب المجموعات الحية إلى النموس.

الكلمة نمس مشتقة من Marathi الإسم mangus (मंगूस) (ينطق [məŋɡuːs]), في نهاية المطاف ربما منDravidian (cf. Telugu mungeesa (ముంగిస), Kannada mungisi (ಮುಙಿಸಿ). شكل الاسم باللغة الانكليزية (منذ1698) was تم تغييرها لتكتب -[[:: أوزة | أوزة]] تنتهي من القوم -سبب التسمية. ليس لديها أي علاقة باشتقاق إسم كلمة «أوزة. في صيغة الجمع '' النموس, [2] أو نادرا, نمس.[3] و تم توضيحها أيضا mungoose.[4]
