يجب عدم الخلط بينها وبين نظرية المعلومات.

The مكتبة الإسكندرية القديمة كانت صيغة مبكرة لتخزين واسترجاع المعلومات.

علم المعلومات Information science يطلق هذا المصطلح على تقنية وعلم المعلومات ويشتمل على خواص وتركيب المعلومات مع نظرية وأساليب نقلها وتنظيمها وتخزينها واسترجاعها وتقويمها وتوزيعها، والاستفادة منها.
