The species is distinguished by relatively long legs, pink lips, dark face and tail-tuft through adulthood, and parted long hair on their head. There is a popular perception that Bonobos are a matriarchal species that engages in uncommonly casual sexual practices.[6] These perceptions have become more controversial in light of new research.[6] إلا أنه يبدو أن مجتمع البونوبو يتمركز حول الإناث، وأكثر سلاماً من مجتمع الشيمبانزي، وأكثر تطبيقاً للمساواة، ولديه طيفاً أوسع من الأنشطة الجنسية.

الاسم بونوبو first appeared in 1954, when Edward Tratz and Heinz Heck proposed it as a new and separate generic term for pygmy chimpanzees. The term has been reported variously [بحاجة لمصدر] as being a word for "chimpanzee" or "ancestor" في احدى لغات البانتو. Another suggestion for the derivation of the name is that the name is a misspelling of the name of the town of Bolobo on the نهر الكونغو, which has been associated with the collection of chimps in the 1920s.[11]
