ڤالتر بنديكس شونفلايس بنجامن Walter Bendix Schönflies Benjamin (ألمانية: [ˈvaltɐ ˈbɛnjamiːn]; 15 يوليو 1892 – 26 سبتبمر 1940)، هو ناقد أدبي، فيلسوف، ناقد اجتماعي، مترجم، مذيع، وكاتب مقالات ألماني. جامعاً بين عناصر المثالية الألمانية أو الرومانسية، المادية التاريخية والصوفية اليهودية، قدم بنجامن إسهامات كبيرة ومؤثرة في نظرية الجمال، والماركسية الغربية، وهو عضو في مدرسة فرانكفورت.

تأثر بنجامن بجرشوم شولم الذي أسس الدراسة الأكاديمية الحديثة للقبالة والصوفية اليهودية. خلال نصف القرن الأخير زاد احترام وتأثير أعماله بشكل ملحوظ، جاعلين بنيامين أحد أهم مفكري القرن العشرين في موضوعي الأدب والتجربة الجمالية الحديثة.

دمج في نقده العلم-اجتماعي والثقافي المادية التاريخية والمثالية الألمانية والأفكار الصوفية اليهودية ، مقدما إسهاما جديدا للفلسفة الماركسية الغربية ونظرية علم الجمال. بصفته باحثا أدبيا كتب مقالات شهيرة حول شارك بودلير، ترجم ديوان بودلير أزهار الشر بالإضافة إلى رواية بروست بحثا عن الزمن المفقود. لأعماله تأثير كبير في الأبحاث الأكاديمية وخاصة مقالته رسالة المترجم والأعمال الفنية في عصر إعادة الإنتاج الميكانيكي.

في عام 1940 ، كتب بنيامين أطروحته المعروفة، "أطروحات حول مفهوم التاريخ" ، المستوحاة من لوحة "أنجلوس نوفوس" (الملاك الجديد) لبول كيلي. رأي في الشخص في اللوحة "ملاك التاريخ" الذي يتذكر ماضي البشرية ويخاف على مستقبلها.

انتحر بنيامين في پورتبو على الحدود الإسپانية الفرنسية، بينما كان يحاول الهرب من النازيين ، عندما أدرك أن المجموعة التي يحاول الهرب معها لن تتمكن من عبور الحدود. تم السماح لباقي أعضاء المجموعة بعبور الحدود في اليوم التالي.
