التأسيس
تأسس مهرجان أبوظبي السينمائي (مهرجان الشرق الأوسط السينمائي الدولي سابقاً) عام 2007 بهدف المساعدة على إيجاد ثقافة سينمائية حيوية في أرجاء المنطقة. ويلتزم هذا الحدث الذي تقدمه هيئة أبوظبي للثقافة والتراث (ADACH) أكتوبر من كل عام تحت رعاية كريمة من معالي الشيخ سلطان بن طحنون آل نهيان، بتنسيق برامج استثنائية تجذب المجتمع المحلي وتسهم في تثقيفه كما تلهم صناع الأفلام وتغذي نمو صناعة السينما في المنطقة.
وإذ يلتزم المهرجان بإتاحة الفرصة لصناع الأفلام العرب للمشاركة بأعمالهم في المسابقات بشكل متكافئ مع أهم المخرجين في السينما العالمية، فإنه يقدم بذلك إلى الجماهير المتنوعة والمتحمسة لهذا الفن في أبوظبي وسيلة للتواصل مع ثقافاتهم وثقافات الآخرين. كما أن التركيز الفعال على الأصوات الجديدة الجريئة من السينما العربية يتصل في الوقت نفسه بدور أبوظبي المحوري كعاصمة ثقافية ناشئة في المنطقة، ويميز المهرجان بكونه المكان الذي يكتشف فيه العالم صناعة السينما العربية الحديثة ويجس نبضها.

- Secretariat, directed by Randall Wallace, the world premiere of a major Hollywood feature film[1]
- Fair Game, a political thriller directed by Doug Liman and starring Naomi Watts and Sean Penn
- In a Better World by the Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier
- Incendies, directed by Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, based on a play by Canadian-Lebanese writer Wajdi Mouawad
- Messages from the Sea by Egyptian filmmaker Daoud Abdel Sayed
- Cirkus Columbia, directed by Danis Tanovic[2]
- Back Door Channels: The Price of Peace, a documentary about the Camp David Peace Accord directed by American director Harry Hunkele and produced by Arick Wierson[3][4]
- The Oath, a documentary by director Laura Poitras[5][6]
