مركز التجارة العالمي World Trade Center مجمّع يتكون من سبعة مبان تم البدء بتنفيذه عام 1966 وانتهى في 1973 ، صمّمه المهندس المعماري الأمريكي ياباني الأصل مينورو ياماساكي وقامت ببنائه إدارة موانئ نيويورك ونيوجيرسي ،يقع المجمّع في قلب المنطقة التجارية لمدينة نيويورك ،يوفر للمكاتب مساحة 13,4 مليون قدم مربعة (ما يعادل 1,24 مليون متر مربع)، يشتهر مركز التجارة العالمي ببرجيه الذّان يلقبان بـالبرجين التوأمين

قبل انهيار البرجين، كان كثير من الوكالات الحكومية والشركات والمنظمات تتخذ من المركز مقار لها. وقد وصل عدد العاملين بمركز التجارة العالمي قبل انهياره إلى نحو 50,000 عامل. يذكر أن المركز كان هدفاً لهجوم ارهابي عام 1993م عندما انفجرتقنبلة كبيرة في مرآب السيارات أسفل المبنى. أدى الانفجار إلى مقتل 6 أفراد وجرح أكثر من ألف شخص آخر. دين أربعة أشخاص بينهم الشيخ عمر عبدالرحمن، مصري الجنسية، بتدبير هذا الانفجار وحكم عليهم بالسجن.

أعد المعماري الأمريكي ميزو ياماساكي تصاميم مركز التجارة العالمي، وبدأت أعمال البناء فيه عام 1966م. وبدأ المستأجرون في شغل البرج الأعلى (417م) عام 1970م، والبرج الآخر (425م) عام 1972م. افتتح المركز رسمياً عام 1973م، وكلف بناؤه 750 مليون دولار أمر

ويحتوي كل برج على 110 طوابق ،تعرض المركز لحريق في 13 فبراير 1975 وللتفجير في 26 فبراير 1993،لكن في 11 سبتمبر 2001 تم تدمير جميع مباني مركز التجارة العالمي:انهار كل من مبنى1ومبنى2(البرجين التوأمين)ومبنى7،وتهدم مبنى3 بسبب سقوط الأجزاء المنهارة من البرجين التوأمين عليه،أما مبنى4 ومبنى5 ومبنى6 فقد تعرضا للأذى الشديد وانهاروا بعد ذلك.قتل في الإعتداء 2,749 مدنيا فيما توفى 13 متأثرين بإصاباتهم.
