This template can be used to provide comparative, at-a-glance information on meteorite subdivisions.
Meteorite classification is a complex, ever evolving field with inconsistent use of terminology. This template sidesteps the complexity by providing fields for both the name of the subdivision being described and the technical term from meteorite classification that best fits it.
Subdivision is an unofficial term used here to avoid the ambiguity inherent to "Group", "Type", etc. and to "Classification" in this context.
Usage
Cut and paste the following lines at the beginning of the document and then fill with data. Do not edit the first line or field names.
{{Infobox meteorite subdivision |Subdivision = <!-- One of Type/Class/Clan/Group/Sub-group/Grouplet/Duo/... --> |Name = |Alternative_names = |Image = |Image_caption = |Image_alt_text = |Compositional_type = <!-- Stony/Iron/etc --> |Type = |Class = |Clan = |Group = <!-- list/link all subgroups of this group as a {{flatlist}} --> |Subgroups = {{flatlist| * }} |Structural_classification = <!-- One of [[Hexahedrite]]/[[Coarsestoctahedrite]]/[[Coarseoctahedrite]]/[[Mediumoctahedrite]]/[[Fineoctahedrite]]/[[Finestoctahedrite]]/[[Plessiticoctahedrite]]/[[Ataxite]]. --> |Parent_body = |Composition = |Petrologic_type = |Number_of_specimens = |TKW = <!-- {{Convert||kg}} --> |Image2 = |Image2_caption = |Image2_alt_text = }}
Parameters
Bold fields are mandatory.
Field | Description |
---|---|
Subdivision | The meteorite classification term that applies, most likely one of Type/Class/Clan/Group/Subgroup/Grouplet/Duo/... Note that this must be entered as a proper noun for the template to work; initial capital letter followed by lower case.
In addition to appearing at the top of the Infobox, this field places the article into Category:Meteorite <subdivision>s. |
Name | The official name of the meteorite subdivision without any abbreviation; likely to be in Table 1 below. |
Alternative_names | Comma separated alternative names. |
Image | Name of an example image of the subdivision without "File:" or any other wikitext (e.g. Willamette Meteorite AMNH.jpg). |
Image_caption | Most captions draw attention to something in the image that is not obvious, such as its relevance to the text. See Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Captions. |
Image_alt_text | Description of the image for visually impaired readers. See Wikipedia:Alternative text for images. |
Compositional_type | Set to Iron if describing a subdivision of the Iron meteorites or Stony if describing a subdivision of the Iron meteorites. |
Type | Choose from the first column of Table 1 below. |
Class | Choose from the middle column of Table 1 below. |
Clan | A clan name from a referenced source. |
Group | Likely to be in the last column of Table 1 below. |
Type | Class | Other subdivision |
Chondrite | [[Carbonaceous chondrite]] | CI, CV, CM, CR, CH, CB, CK, CO, C ungrouped |
[[Ordinary chondrite]] | H3, H4, H5, L3, LL6, etc... | |
[[Enstatite chondrite]] | EH, EL | |
[[Rumuruti chondrite]] | ||
[[Kakangari chondrite]] | ||
Achondrite | [[Primitive achondrite]] | Acapulcoite, Lodranite, Winonaite |
[[Asteroidal achondrite]] | [[Howardite]], [[Eucrite]], [[Diogenite]], [[Aubrite]], [[Angrite]], [[Ureilite]], Brachinite | |
[[Lunar meteorite]] | Mare basalts, Impact breccia | |

Stony-iron | [[Pallasite]] | Main group, Eagle Station group, Pyroxene grouplet |
[[Mesosiderite]] |
Field | Description |
---|---|
Structural_classification | Only for irons and, if applicable, stony-irons. Choose from:
|
Parent_body | Best referenced guess or subdivision name (by convention). |
Composition | Chemical (irons) or mineral (stony) composition (e.g. 93% Fe, 5.9% Ni, 0.42% Co, 0.46% P). |
Petrologic_type | See petrologic type; may be more than one. |
Number_of_specimens | The number of known specimens of this group. |
TKW | Total known weight, e.g. 300 kg. |
Image2 | A second image showing additional details. |
Image2_caption | Most captions draw attention to something in the image that is not obvious, such as its relevance to the text. See Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Captions. |
