Usage
To use the template, copy the wikitext below, and paste it in the Veneration section of the article’s main page. If the article is not divided into sections, it should be placed on top. Then, fill out the data fields. "Name" is the only required parameter, due to the highly variable information reflected in the articles. You may omit any other unused fields, but try to fill in as many as possible, even if the information is very general.
Note that this template is for saints' articles that feature multiple saints as the subject, for example, Martyrs of Córdoba, or Martyrs of Japan, where an infobox designed for one person will not fit. Almost invariably, articles that demand such an infobox are for groups of martyrs, canonized simultaneously.
This infobox could also be appropriate for groups of saints not necessarily bound by martyrdom, such as Fourteen Holy Helpers.
{{Infobox martyrs |name = |birth_date = |death_date = |martyred_by = |means_of_martyrdom = |feast_day = |venerated_in = |image = |imagesize = |caption = |birth_place = |death_place = |beatified_date = |beatified_place = |beatified_by = |canonized_label = |canonized_date = |canonized_place = |canonized_by = |attributes = |patronage = |major_shrine = |notable_members = }}
Required parameters
- name The name under which the group or martyrs is venerated or best known. This should usually be the same as the article name.
Optional parameters
- feast_day Saints' group feast day. Parameter is optional, as there may or may not be a group feast day.
- venerated_in Denomination(s) where the saints are recognized.
- image An icon, image of a painting, etc. Use the name of the image file only. Do not include "Image:"
- image_size Width of the image. Use appropriate units, e.g. 150px for 150 pixels. If this parameter is omitted, 250px will be used.
- caption Caption for image, if necessary.
- birth_date Era of births. Will probably be highly approximate, i.e., fifth century.
- birth_place Place or places of birth. Most martyr groups have a wide place of birth in common (i.e., "Japan", "Antioch"); if this is not the case, exclude the field.
- death_date Date or dates of death. Can be approximate; some groups of martyrs will have died on the same day, others over the course of several years.
- death_place Place of death. May be a wide area, as in the case of Eighty-five martyrs of England and Wales, or may be more precise, such as in Martyrs of Compiègne.
- martyred_by The individual or party that effected the martyrdom.
- means_of_martyrdom How the martyrs were put to death; e.g., crucifixion, decapitation
- beatified_date Date of beatification, if applicable.
- beatified_place Place where beatification was announced, if applicable.
- beatified_by Authority for beatification. In Catholicism, this will be the Pope of the time.
- canonized_label Label for the canonization section; defaults to "Canonized"
- canonized_date Date of canonization, if applicable.
- canonized_place Place where canonization/glorification was solemnly performed.
- canonized_by Authority for canonization. In Catholicism this will be the Pope of the time; in Orthodoxy is usually a synod.
- attributes Standard iconographic elements. Usually pontifical or episcopal insignia, tools of martyrdom, and so forth. These elements are not common for large groups of saints.
- patronage People, places, diseases...
- major_shrine Perhaps the site of the saints' relics or martyrdom.
- notable_members Allows easy linking to specific articles of individuals in the group of martyrs that may have been notable enough to merit individual articles.
Microformat
The HTML mark-up produced by this template includes an hCard microformat that makes an organization's details readily parsable by computer programs. This aids tasks such as the cataloguing of articles and maintenance of databases. For more information about the use of microformats on Wikipedia, please visit the Microformat WikiProject.- Subtemplates
- Use {{start date}} for the date on which an organisation was "established", "founded", "opened" or otherwise started, unless that date is before 1583 CE.
- Use {{URL}} for an organisation's URL.
- Use {{coord}} for coordinates associated with the organisation (e.g. the location of its headquarters). A Geo microformat will then make these coordinates parsable, e.g. for use in online mapping, downloading to a GPS unit, etc.
Please do not remove instances of these subtemplates.
