Parameters

Mandatory

  • name = the official name (without the word island)
  • location = the body of water in which the island is located

Optional

Country parameters

The following parameters define the list of countries with a claim to the island(s). Each country can be specified either with the standard three-letter ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 code, or a name by which the country is commonly known (e.g., "US", "South Korea", "Democratic People's Republic of Korea").

  • country = the country which administers or governs the island. Use this parameter only if one of the contenders is known to exert exclusive factual control on the ground, e.g. by maintaining permanent human presence or installations on the territory in question or by successfully maintaining sole military control.
  • country claim = the first claimant country, in alphabetical order (excluding the administrating country, if it has already been specified with "country=")
  • country 1 claim
  • country 2 claim
  • country 3 claim
  • country 4 claim
  • country 5 claim
  • country 6 claim
  • country 7 claim = any further countries, in alphabetical order

Each of the country entries may be accompanied by further parameters providing information about political context, administrative divisions etc.:

  • country admin divisions title
  • country claim divisions title
  • country 1 claim divisions title
  • etc. = title of the type of administrative division (e.g. "province") to which the islands belong (according to each country's claims)
  • country admin divisions
  • country claim divisions
  • country 1 claim divisions
  • etc. = name of the administrative division in question
  • country admin divisions title 1
  • country admin divisions 1
  • country admin divisions title 2
  • country admin divisions 2
  • country claim divisions title 1
  • country claim divisions 1
  • country claim divisions title 2
  • country claim divisions 2 = administrative division types and names on up to two further hierarchical levels (currently only supported for "country" and "country claim" entries, not for any further countries in the list)
  • country capital
  • country largest city
  • country largest city population = administrative capital and/or largest city/town on the island(s)
  • country claim capital
  • country claim largest city
  • country claim largest city population
  • country 1 claim capital
  • country 1 claim largest city
  • country 1 claim largest city population =
  • etc. = capital and/or largest city according to each competing country (use only if different from the above, e.g. if different countries have factual control of different parts of the island)
  • country leader title
  • country leader name
  • country claim leader title
  • country claim leader name
  • country 1 claim leader title
  • country 1 claim leader name
  • etc. = political office and name of a political leader (unclear whether this should be used for the leader of the country or of the local administrative division)

Other parameters

  • plural = "yes" if more than one island
  • image name = locator/satellite/other map image (without the prefix "Image:")
  • image caption = caption for the image
  • image size = size of the image in pixels (e.g., "100px")
  • locator map = a locator map image (without the prefix "File:") if there is one separate from the image used for the parameter "image name"
    • Add map_custom=yes to use maps with complex syntax, such as those created with {{location map}}; will not add "File:" to locator map.
  • native name = only when the common name is different from the native name
  • native name link = state the name of a Wikipedia article about the language that the native name of the island is in, e.g., "Indonesian language" for an Indonesian island. Do not wikilink the country name like this: "[[Indonesian language]]".
  • nickname = for a well known nickname
  • coordinates = geographic coordinates: use {{coord}} with the parameter "display=inline, title"
  • archipelago = the name of the group of islands the island belongs to
  • total islands = total number of islands (for archipelagos only)
  • major islands = names of the major islands (for archipelagos only)
  • area = the total area of the island (you may want to use the {{convert}} template)
    • area_km2 or area_sqmi = alternatively, state the area in either square kilometres or square miles without using {{convert}}; the conversion will be done automatically
  • length = length of the island (you may want to use the {{convert}} template)
    • length_km or length_mi = alternatively, state the length in either kilometres or miles without using {{convert}}; the conversion will be done automatically
  • width = width of the island (you may want to use the {{convert}} template)
    • width_km or width_mi = alternatively, state the width in either kilometres or miles without using {{convert}}; the conversion will be done automatically
  • coastline = the length of coastline of the island (you may want to use the {{convert}} template)
    • coastline_km or coastline_mi = alternatively, state the length of the coastline in either kilometres or miles without using {{convert}}; the conversion will be done automatically
  • highest mount = name of the highest point on the island, if any
  • elevation = elevation of the highest point (you may want to use the {{convert}} template)
    • elevation_m or elevation_ft = alternatively, state the height of the highest point in either metres or feet without using {{convert}}; the conversion will be done automatically
  • demonym = the name the people of the island are called that is based on location
  • population = the size of the island's population
  • population as of = the year when the population census took place
  • density = the population density of the island, expressed as the number of people per a unit of area
  • ethnic groups = list the major ethnic groups making up the island's population
  • additional info = a space for additional information at the bottom of the infobox

Microformat

The HTML mark up produced by this template includes an hCard microformat, which makes the place-name and location parsable by computers, either acting automatically to catalogue article across Wikipedia, or via a browser tool operated by a person, to (for example) add the subject to an address book. Within the hCard is a Geo microformat, which additionally makes the coordinates (latitude & longitude) parsable, so that they can be, say, looked up on a map, or downloaded to a GPS unit. For more information about the use of microformats on Wikipedia, please see the microformat project.

hCard uses HTML classes including:

  • "adr"
  • "county-name"
  • "fn"
  • "label"
  • "locality"
  • "nickname"
  • "note"
  • "org"
  • "region"
  • "street-address"
  • "vcard"

Geo is produced by calling {{coord}}, and uses HTML classes:

  • "geo"
  • "latitude"
  • "longitude"

Please do not rename or remove these classes.

When giving coordinates, please don't be overly precise.
