الوطن البديل للفلسطينيين

رداً على اقتراح إنشاء وطن بديل للفلسطينيين]]، يقول سالزمان:

«الجنرال گيورا إيلاند يزعم أنه "لأن إسرائيل والفلسطينيين يتشاركان تعتبر صغيرة جداً بالنسبة لهم، فلا يمكن لهم تقديم تنازلات جوهرية، في لعبة محصلتها صفر يمكن أن تؤدي إلى نهاية مميتة محققة." هذا الزعم يفترض أن الأرض هي قلب النزاع الفلسطيني الإسرائيلي، وأنه إذا ما كان للفلسطينيين أراضي كافية، فسوف يكونون سعداء لغاية بالعيش جنباً إلى جنب مع إسرائيل.

يبدو أن السفير نبيل فهمي يتفق على أن الأرض قضية حاسمة: "استمرت اتفاقية السلام الإسرائيلية المصرية لسنوات تحت ضغوط صعبة لأنها أعطت لمصر كامل أراضيها، ولذلك فلم تنجر الدولتان مرة أخرى للنزاع." الدرس الذي يجب أن تعيه إسرائيل، حسب فهمي، أن الفلسطينيين يجب أن يستردوا كامل أرضهم.

الخلل في كلا الزعمين أنه إذا ما إسترد الفلسطينيون كامل أرضهم فسوف تختفي إسرائيل، وسوف يغادر السكان اليهود أو يوافقون على العودة لعيش كأهل الذمة تحت الحكم الإسلامي. دولة إسرائيل هي، بالطبع، كيان غير شرعي في نظر العرب المسلمين. من وجهة نظر العرب، أن جميع الأراضي التي كانت تحت سيطرة العرب يجب أن تعود مرة أخرى؛ ومن الناحية الأخرى، يرون أنه يجب أن يعود اليهود لمكانهم الصحيح كأهل ذمة.

هذا الرأي الذي دائماً ما يتبناه الفلسطينيين، سواء قبل تأسيس إسرائيل أو بعد سيطرة إسرائيل على الضفة الغربية. لم يعد اولمرت يستطيع جعل "شريكه الفلسطيني في السلام" يوافق على وجوب الاعتراف بإسرائيل كدولة يهودية، أكثر إمكانية قيادة حرب ناجحة أو التأكد من أن غزة لم تعد أراضي إرهابية.

الاوروپيون، الأمريكان، وبعض الإسرائيليين يفضلون إيهام أنفسهم، والإنغماس في أمل خطير لكنه حقيقي، وهو أن الفلسطينيين يردون السلام والتنمية. لكن الغربيون جميعاً يعانون من التحيز؛ هم يصدقون ما يقال لهم، أكثر مما يقوله الفلسطينيون لبعضهم البعض. اشتهر الرئيس عرفات لقوله شيئاً واحداً بالإنگليزية، والذي قاله عكسه تماماً بالعربية. لكن الغربيون وبعض الإسرائيليين يرفضون النُطق العربي وكذلك السياسات المحلية.

بالطبع، من المستحيل التنبؤ بالمستقبل. لكن أحداث الماضي قد تناسب الظروف المستقبيلة بشكل غير دقيق. قد لا يكون لا يشبه المستقبل الماضي. لكن بعض الإسرائيليين يريدون "رهان على المزرعة" يضمن أن المستقبل سيكون مختلفاً. لكن أليسوا هم نفس الإسرائيليين الذين أخبرونا بأن غزة ستصبح هونگ كونگ الشرق الأوسط الجديدة؟ تمني لم يجلب حاضر مشرق، وأجرؤ على القول بأنه لن يأتي بمستقبل مشرق.»
