سلاح الجو Air Force يشكل إسوة بالقوات الأرضية والبحرية أحد أسس كل جيش في العالم.وقد ظهر سلاح الجو في بدايات هذا القرن مع ظهور الطائرات. حيث تم إستعمالها أساسا في عمليات الإستكشاف و -قصف- قوات العدو.حيث كانت هذه الطائرات تابعة للقوات الأرضية.وبعد أن أثبتت الطائرات أهميتها تنبهت الدول إلى ضرورة تشكيل أجهزة مستقلة لاستغلال هذا القطاع الحيوي.

وخلال الحربين العالميتين الأولى و الثانية، و خصوصاً في الحرب العالمية الثانية حيث ظهر التقدم التقني ظهرت أيضاً القوات الجوية كسلاح يمكن الاعتماد عليه في تقديم الدعم(غطاء جوي) للقوات أرضية كانت أو بحرية، و تطور سلاح الجو في الحرب العالمية الثانية اعتماداً على هذه الفكرة، طور الألمان و الأمريكيون بعض التقنيات في مجال الطيران القتالي، و ازدادت قدرة الطائرات و مداها عندما وضعت على سفن ضخمة(حاملات الطائرات)، وبهذا استطاعت قوات الحلفاء بواسطة الدعم الجوي الكبير الذي قدمته الولايات المتحدة عبر حاملات طائراتها المترامية في المحيط الأطلنطي و المحيط الهادي، و فاز الحلفاء قي حرب طويلة جعلت دول العالم كلها تدرك أهمية سلاح الجو، وبهذا سعت كل الدول الكبرى إلى تطوير قدراتها في هذا المجال.

The organizational structures of air forces vary between nations: some air forces (such as the United States Air Force, the Royal Air Force) are divided into commands, groups and squadrons; others (such as the Soviet Air Force) have an Army-style organizational structure. The modern Royal Canadian Air Force uses Air Division as the formation between wings and the entire air command. Like the RAF, Canadian wings consist of squadrons. In the case of China the Air Force headquarters consists of four departments: Command, Political, Logistic, and Equipment, which mirrors the four general departments of the People's Liberation Army. Below the headquarters, Military Region Air Forces (MRAF) direct divisions (Fighter, Attack, Bomber), which in turn direct regiments and squadrons.[1]

Air Force Special Forces, such as US Air Force Special Tactics, Brazilian Para-SAR, and Pakistani Special Service Wing, are used in a variety of roles including combat search and rescue, special reconnaissance, direct action, counter-insurgency, intelligence operations, and serving as joint terminal attack controllers attached to ground and special operations forces.
