ديڤد هربرت لورنس David Herbert Lawrence (و.11 سبتمبر 1885 – ت. 2 مارس 1930)، هو روائي، شاعر، كاتب مسرحي، كاتب مقالات، ناقد أدبي ورسام إنگليزي، كان ينشر أعماله باسم د. هـ. لورنس. وهو أحد أهم الأدباء البريطانيين في القرن العشرين. تعددت مجالات إبداعه من الروايات الطويلة إلى القصص القصيرة والمسرحيات والقصائد الشعرية والكتابات النقدية. من أشهر أعماله عشيق الليدي تشاترلي.

كتب في أدب الرحلات وترجم أعمالاً عديدة من اللغة الفرنسية إلى الإنگليزية وله لوحات عديدة مرسومة، وكان التأثير السلبي للحضارة الحديثة على الجوانب الإنسانية للحياة وتجريد هذه الحياة من البعد الإنساني هو محور أغلب أعمال هذا الأديب البريطاني، ويرى بعض النقاد أن الرجل أسرف في سوداويته وكذلك في الاعتماد على المشاهد الجنسية الفجة في توصيل أفكاره.

يعدُّ د. هـ. لورنس برواياته أبناء وعشاق ونساء عاشقات وعشيق ليدي تشاترلي، من أبرز كتّاب الرواية الإنكليزية إلى جانب وولف وجويس وكونراد، كما كتب في أغلب الأنواع الأدبية الأخرى.

 حياته وعمله

ولد في بلدة إيستتوود، نوتنگام‌شير وسط إنگلترة لأب عمل في مناجم الفحم وأمّ مدرّسة كان لها كبير الأثر في نشأته وبنيته الجسدية والنفسية. بعد حصوله على منحة دراسية في مدرسة نوتنگهام الثانوية انتسب إلى جامعة يونڤرستي كولدج في المدينة وتأهل للتعليم. كان لتعرفه فريدا ويكلي زوجة أستاذه في الجامعة - وهي ألمانية ومن عائلة فون ريشتْهوفن النبيلة - ومن ثم هروبهما إلى ألمانيا، أثر باقٍ في حياته؛ إذ تزوجا عام 1914 وجابا جميع أصقاع الأرض معاً واستقرا في أماكن متعددة، وكانت علاقتهما خلفية العديد من رواياته، حتى وفاته في مصح لمرضى السل في مدينة ڤنس الفرنسية.

كتب لورنس كثيراً قبل نشره روايته أبناء وعشاق (1913) التي لم تنجح تجارياً إلا أنها ضمنت له الشهرة، وكانت أولى رواياته الناضجة عالج فيها العلاقات العائلية والغرامية للشخصية الرئيسية فيها، وهو الشاب بول موريل، المتحدر من أسرة بسيطة في مدينة إنگليزية تعيش على مناجم الفحم، وعلاقته بأبيه وأمه، والنساء إجمالاً، إضافة إلى المشكلات التي ترافق التطور الصناعي والاقتصادي. والرواية هي سيرة لورنس الذاتية. تلت ذلك أولى مجموعاته الشعرية قصائد حب وغيرها (1913)، وأولى مجموعات القصص القصيرة الضابط الپروسي وقصص أخرى (1914).

بدأت التعقيدات في حياة لورنس بالظهور مع روايته قوس قزح عام 1915، التي منعتها الرقابة بسبب الإباحية، ولاعجب في ذلك في مجتمع كان لايزال يقوم على القيم الفكتورية المتزمتة. تتناول الرواية حياة ثلاثة أجيال من عائلة برانگوين ، والمنافسة الدائرة بين رجال العائلة البسطاء المنطوين على أنفسهم ويبن نسائها المنفتحات على العالم المقبلات على الحياة، بين الريف والمدينة، بين المجتمع الزراعي والآخر الصناعي. وتابع لورنس في نساء عاشقات (1921)، التي هاجمتها الصحافة الإنگليزية بشدة، مصير هذه العائلة ممثلة بالأختين برانگوين وعلاقاتهما مع الجنس الآخر. وكانت عشيق ليدي تشاترلي (1928) آخر رواياته وأعاد كتابتها غير مرة، ونشرها بداية في إيطاليا في طبعة محدودة، ثم في باريس عام 1929، وظهرت في إنكلترا في طبعة مختصرة في عام 1932، ولم يظهر نصها الكامل إلا في عام 1959 في الولايات المتحدة وفي عام 1960 في إنكلترا، وأثار ذلك حينها ضجة كبيرة بسبب الملاحقة القضائية التي تعرضت لها دار پنگوين التي نشرتها. وقد كان لكتاباته الجريئة هذه - على الرغم من مآخذها كافة - أثر تثقيفي مهم في جيل ما بين الحربين العالميتين. لم يكن هدف لورنس في هذه الروايات، التي تعرضت وكاتبها للانتقاد والتشهير والاضطهاد والملاحقة، الإباحية لذاتها بل سبر أغوار العلاقة الزوجية بأبعادها كافة، وإلقاء الضوء عليها على نحو مباشر وصريح. وثيمته الأساسية فيها هي نقد المجتمع الصناعي الذي شلَّ - في رأيه - قدرة الإنسان على إقامة علاقات حسية طبيعية، مثلما شلَّت الحرب العالمية الأولى لورد كليفورد نتيجة إصابته، في حين تتفجر زوجته ليدي تشاترلي طاقة وعنفواناً فتلجأ إلى حارس الغابة، الذي يعمل لدى زوجها، وتنشأ بينهما علاقة في أحضان الطبيعة ويبدأان معاً حياة جديدة.

 آراءه

عاش لورنس حياة عاصفة، وكان طوباوياً يبحث عن الكمال، متعدد الوجوه والاهتمامات، وعبقرياً فذاً. إلا أن ذلك لم يظهر دائماً في كتاباته؛ وربما كان جهره بآرائه فيها، ومحاولاته الإرشاد والإصلاح في مجتمع فكتوري محافظ هو السبب في كبت تلك العبقرية.

 الشعر

لايمكن إغفال إسهام لورنس الشعري، فقد كتب شعراً حراً جميلاً مرهف الحس بلغة تتناسب وذلك الحس، ويعد ديوان عصافير وحيوانات وأزهار (1923) حول الطبيعة أفضل ما كُتب في هذا المجال. كتب لورنس كثيراً غير ذلك مثل مجموعة قصص الحب بين أكوام القش وقصص أخرى (1930)، ودواوين عشقيات (1916)، و«قصائد جديدة» (1918)، ومسرحيات ترمل السيدة هولرويد (1914)، وديڤد (1926)، وكتاب الرحلات البحر وسردينيا (1921)، وحول نظرياته في علم النفس فانتازيا اللاوعي (1922)، وأيضاً رسائله الكثيرة، خاصة تلك الموجهة إلى الفيلسوف برتراند رسل.
