أرثر أونكن لفجوي، المؤرخ وفيلسوف العلوم

آرثر اُنكن لڤجوي Arthur Oncken Lovejoy (عاش 10 أكتوبر 1873 - 30 ديسمبر 1962) فيلسوف ومؤرخ فكري أمريكي مؤثر. خلق علم "تاريخ الأفكار" ولقن طرق دراستها في العقود الأولى من القرن العشرين. عمل لوفجوي أستاذاً للتاريخ في جامعة جونز هوپكنز منذ 1910 وحتى 1938، وهناك أشرف على اجتماعات (نادي تاريخ الأفكار) الذي قام بتأسيسه لعدة عقود.

 مقاربة لڤجوي - الوحدات الفكرية كوحدات تحليلية

يعتمد علم تاريخ الأفكار عند لڤجوي على مفهوم الوحدات الفكرية (Unit-Ideas) كوحدات تحليلية قياسية. هذه الوحدات الفكرية تشكل لبنات البناء الأساسية لتاريخ الأفكار. فمن وجهة نظر لڤجوي، توجد هناك وحدات فكرية ثابتة في التاريخ، ورغم أن هذه الوحدات الفكرية غير متغيرة بذاتها، إلا أنها تنفصل وتلتحم عبر الزمن في سياقات وأنساق مختلفة لتعطي مفاهيم وظواهر تاريخية جديدة. فالتحول الذي يطرأ على الثقافات الانسانية من عهد إلى آخر هو في حقيقة الأمر تحول في أشكال العلاقات والارتباطات بين هذه الوحدات الفكرية الثابتة، وليس تغير في الوحدات ذاتها. أي أن هذه الوحدات تتمتع بدرجة معينة من الثبات، مما يتيح استعمالها كوحدات تحليلية. ويرى لڤجوي أن مهمة مؤرخ الأفكار هي اكتشاف هذه الوحدات الفكرية وتبيان مواقع مدها وانحسارها، وارتباطها وانفصالها عبر الحقب الزمنية المختلفة.
