Strapwork monument in Beer stone to Sir John Chichester (d.1569), of Raleigh, Pilton. Pilton Church, Devon. Heraldic escutcheons, left to right:

  • Chichester, originally arms of de Raleigh
  • de Raleigh of Raleigh, Pilton, impaling Peverell of Sampford Peverell, representing marriage of Sir Thomas Raleigh (temp Henry III (1216-1272) and Lora Peverell, daughter of Sir Hugh Peverell (Vivian, Lt.Col. J.L., (Ed.) The Visitations of the County of Devon: Comprising the Heralds' Visitations of 1531, 1564 & 1620, Exeter, 1895, p.638)
  • de Raleigh of Raleigh impaling Chandos, representing the marriage of Sir William Raleigh (grandson of Sir Thomas Raleigh and Lora Peverell) and Beatrix Shandos, daughter of Sir Robert Shandos (Vivian, p.638). Carew's Scroll of Arms (1588), no.409: "Chandos quartered by Sir John Chichester".
  • Argent, two bars gules in chief three torteaux (Mules/de Moels) (Carew's Scroll of Arms (1588), no.402). Mules family held Ernsborough in the parish of Swimbridge, North Devon. Sir John Mules of Ernsborough (alias Hernesburgh, Yernesburgh, Irishborough, etc (Thorn, Caroline & Frank, (eds.) Domesday Book, (Morris, John, gen.ed.) Vol. 9, Devon, Parts 1 & 2, Phillimore Press, Chichester, 1985, Part 2 (notes), 2:11)) built the north aisle of Swimbridge Church and endowed it with his estate of Furse (Source: Risdon, Tristram (d.1640), Survey of Devon, 1811 edition, London, 1811, with 1810 Additions, p.324) impaling Sable three lions rampant argent, to represent the marriage of Roger Mules to Alice Prouse, daughter and heiress of William Prouse of Orton and of Gidleigh Castle (Vivian, p.626). Their daughter and heiress was Johanna Mules, the wife of John Wotton of Widworthy. Their son was John Wotton, who married Engaret Dymock, daughter and heiress of Walter Dymock, whose daughter and co-heiress was Alice Wotton, wife of Sir John Chichester (1385-1437) of Raleigh.   • 7:Beaumont of Shirwell, a Chichester heiress
  • 8:Stockhay: Ermine, a chevron undee cotised undee sable alias: Argent billetee sable, a chevron undee cotised undee sable (Stokhey/Stockhay of Saunton? (Vivian, pp.65,503; Pole, p.395) Carew's Scroll of Arms (1588), no.426: "Ermine, a chevron between two chevronelles wavy sable, the chevronelles wavy and not the chevron. Stockhay quartered by Sir John Chichester, Knight, in Pilton Church. He was a man of arms anno 17 Edward II. Stokebroke, Raddon and Baldwyne were Robert de Stokeheys anno 9 Edward II" (A Beaumont heiress ?)
  • 9:Willington of Umberleigh, a Beaumont heiress
  • 10:Wise, a Beaumont heiress, for Thomasine Wise, daughter and heiress of Oliver Wise of Sydenham (Vivian, p.791), Devon, wife of Hugh Beaumont (12457-1507) of Youlston and Shirwell, and mother of the heiress Margaret Beaumont, wife of John Chichester (1472-1537/8) of Raleigh.(Vivian, p.65)
