The UoTATioN of Coloured Discs applied to facilitate theStudy of the Laws of Harmonious Colouring, and tothe Multiplication of Images of Objects into Kaleido-scopic Combinations. By John Gorham, M.R.C.S., &c. In this paper I purpose to show how the rotation ofcoloured discs may be adapted—first, to assist in the inves-tigation of the laws of harmonious colouring, and secondly,to the construction of combinations of perfect symmetry ofform and colour, which result from the multiplication ofimages of simple patterns used as objects. Such combina-tions are so beautiful that they may be said to vie with, evenif not to surpass, those of the kaleidoscope; and althoughthe principle of multiplication is diflFerent in the two instru-ments, yet the resemblance between the figures is sufficientlystrong to induce me to designate the apparatus which pro-duces such forms by rotation as the Kaleidoscopic Colour-top.
