Provenance Commissioned by the sitter and thence by descent to his daughter, Lady Mary Stanhope (1674–1704), who married the Rt Hon. Thomas Coke (1674–1727), of Melbourne Hall, Derbyshire, in 1698; Thomas Coke married, secondly, Elizabeth Hales (d. 1722), a Maid of Honour to Queen Anne;

By descent to their son, George Lewis Coke (1715–1751);

By inheritance to his sister, Charlotte, wife of Sir Matthew Lamb, 1st Bt (1705–1768);

By descent to their son, Peniston Lamb, 1st Viscount Melbourne (1745–1828);

By descent to his son, William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne (1779–1848), Prime Minister of Great Britain;

By inheritance to his brother, Frederick Lamb, 3rd Viscount Melbourne (1782–1853);
