One of the former wayside wheelchair lifts of the MAX Light Rail system in Portland, Oregon, undergoing maintenance – with the lift platform raised and its ramp/bridgeplate extended, and the maintenance-access panel open. "Wayside" means placed along the rail line's right-of-way, as opposed to being on board the vehicles. This particular lift was on the northbound/outbound platform of the Old Town/Chinatown station. New, low-floor light rail vehicles began to enter service on the MAX system on August 31, 1997, and by early October enough had done so to ensure that every train in service had at least one low-floor car. That development rendered the wayside lifts unneeded, because mobility-impaired riders could simply roll onto the car without need to be lifted over steps in the doorways. The lifts were taken out of use at the end of the service day on October 4, 1997, and subsequently removed from all stations. |
