وصف قصير
⧼wm-license-information-description⧽ |
English: The barefoot corpse of lynched Laura Nelson. May 25, 1911, Okemah, Oklahoma. Gelatin silver print. Real photo postcard. 3 1/2 x 5 1/2". Etched in the negative:"copyright-1911-g.h.farnum, okemah. okla 2898." Stamp on reverse, "unmailable."
Laura Nelson was hanged along with her son for the murder of a white deputy sheriff. Both mother and son insisted to the sheriff that they shot the deputy. It was later determined that it was the son who did the shooting. The deputy went to the Nelson house to recover stolen meat. When the deputy attempted to arrested the woman, evidently the son appeared with a gun and shot him. The allegation of rape and/or murder was the impetus for the vast majority of white-on-black lynchings between 1882 to 1960 |
