Lattin's Defense. Statement in Regard to the Tramp Bills in Oyster Bay. Farmingdale, Long Island; August 20, 1898. Deputy Sheriff Jarvis A. Lattin, of this place, whose alleged tramp bills have created material for such a storm, has this to say in defense of his bill in today's issue of the "East Norwich Enterprise:" "The reports in the different papers as to my bills for services rendered as an official of the Town of Oyster Bay, have done me an injustice in that they are not founded upon facts. First — These reports state that the bill presented to the Town Board was for service rendered as a deputy sheriff. This is not true, as the work charged for was done while I was a constable of the town. Second — Some papers stated that the period of time covered my services for which charges was made was six weeks. This second misrepresentation, scarcely merits correction. The time was six months and not six weeks. Third — The statement that I charged for notice served on myself as complainant, was a dastardly, contemptable lie, no such charge, having been made. Denials of the misstatements, as made in the Brooklyn "Times" and "Eagle," have been sent to both of those papers in the form of an interview by their regular correspondents, but as yet neither of those papers have seen fit to retract the groundless accusations which they have made or seem willing to permit me through their columns to present my side of the story for the perusal of the public. The people of Farmingdale are well aware of the fact that the village has within the past year been overrun with tramps, and many of the best and influential citizens have requested me to allow no tramps to remain at large, well knowing the danger attending any place where so many tramps congregate. In doing my duty as an officer elected by the people, and in complying with requests made by the best citizens for the safety of the community, I am set upon by the press and maligned, the most dastardly lie of all being that I made a charge of three trips to Long Island City in one day when it was not possible to make more trips than two, etc. No such charge was made except by the press.
