English: Combatants of the 8th Xhosa war (also: Mlanjeni's War and Bonte Oorlog), defending a position in the Water Kloof during the second year of the war, 1851. Xhosa, Kat River Khoi-khoi and some army deserters are depicted. An approximate location is given below.
The war started at Kaalhoek during Christmas time, 1850, and by 1852 the Water Kloof was secured by colonial forces. The ringleaders of the insurgents surrendered in 1853. |
