Logo used on foreign aid delivered by the United States Mutual Security Agency and successor agencies, starting about 1953.

This logo was a revision of the previous emblem used during the Marshall Plan, made by an employee in the Marking and Labeling Office of the Mutual Security Agency, Eleanor Gault, in 1953. During her research, Gault discovered that "clasped hands" have been recognized as a sign of unity, goodwill, and cooperation for centuries. She concluded that clasped hands, "could serve to identify the aid as part of the mutual effort with mutual benefits shared by our country and friends around the world."

The logo and seal for the United States Agency for International Development (the current incarnation of similar aid programs) is descended from this logo.

For more information, see USAID's branding guidelines, in particular the Graphic Standards Manual.
