This was my secondary School. I was there from 1949 until 1955. The building in the photo is the original school and dates from the mid 1870s. There are more modern buildings on the far side of the building. There's information about it here.

John Lyon was the man who founded Harrow School in 1572 for the yeomen of Harrow. But, by Victorian times, it had moved so far up-market that it was well out of the reach of the descendents of such folk. The Lower School of John Lyon was therefore opened in 1876 to serve the purpose originally envisaged by the founder. When I was there in the early 1950's it was still known by its original name, but now it's simply called John Lyon's.

Strangely, in the early 1920s, my favourite uncle, Frank Roberts, had attended Alleyn’s School in Dulwich on the other side of London. Just as John Lyons is the lower school of Harrow, Alleyn’s is the lower school of Dulwich College, the establishment founded in 1619 by Edward Alleyn to serve the yeomen of Dulwich.

This shot was taken in 2009 but I've adjusted the date to make it correspond to the time I was there. The engraving in the first comment shows the scholl as it was in about 1900.
