ctressMr. Jefferson always spoke in the highest praise.Had it not been for a misfortune which dis-figured her, Cornelia Jefferson would no doubthave been famous. She married and had oneson, Charles Jackson, who became a very cleveractor. Mrs. Jackson had retired from the stage formany years, when her brother conceived the ideaof having her play the part of Tilly Slowboy inThe Cricket on the Hearth in his company. The very misfortune which had ended hercareer in early life, made her in this characterthe very ideal of Dickens thought, and al-though she was quite deaf and nearly sixtyyears of age, she took the part to perfection,notwithstanding the fact that her cues inthe piece had all to be given to her by gesturesand signs. Mr. Jefferson was most fond of his little sis-ter, whose wit and humour were a foil for hisown; she frequently accompanied him upon fish-ing trips, and was known to all his friends asAunty Con. She lived near her brother at(Buzzards Bay until just before her death.

JOSEPH JEFFERSON 311 Three of Mr. Jeffersons sons married ladiesof the dramatic profession, who remained uponthe stage after their marriage. Only one other woman among the immediatemembers of the family adopted the stage (andfor a short period only), although Mr. Jeffer-son frequently urged his granddaughters tomake the stage their profession, and in fact en-couraged them by having them travel with himin his company, appearing in the ballroomscene in Lend Me Five Shillings. It was nota success, however, for the young ladies werenever able to overcome stage fright. They notonly hid their talent, but also tried to hide them-selves behind scenery, stage furniture, and—asone declared—behind the tallest super shecould find! With one exception the grand-daughters of the great actor failed him. Lauretta, the youngest daughter of ThomasJefferson, inherited the family talent.
