السير فرانسيس دريك (1540؟ - 1596م). قرصان وقائد عسكري، ويعد أول إنجليزي يُبحر حول العالم. وقد ساعدت حروبه البحرية ضد الأسبان ـ وهم منافسو الإنجليز الرئيسيون ـ إنجلترا على أن تصبح قوة بحرية رئيسية.

كان دريك أشهر قباطنة البحر الذين كانوا يطوفون المحيطات خلال حكم الملكة إليزابيث الأولى، وعاش في أوج عهد القرصنة، وأصبح من أشهر القراصنة الذين كان يُخشى جانبهم في ذلك الوقت.

لم يتلق دريك أي تعليم رسمي، لكنه كان يتمتع بالطموح والثقة الكبيرة بنفسه. وفي الحروب كان مقدامًا وسريعًا وقاسي الفؤاد في بعض الأحيان.

 النشأة

وُلد دريك قرب بليموث في ديفون بإنجلترا، وانتقلت عائلته عام 1549م إلى روتشستر، وهي ميناء بحري في كنت. وأصبح والده قسًا في أحواض السفن القريبة، ونشأ الغلام بين السفن والبحارة.
