بريگادير رالف ألجر باگنولد Ralph Alger Bagnold، FRS[1] OBE,[2] (عاش 3 أبريل 1896 - 28 مايو 1990) كان مؤسس وأول قائد لمجموعة الصحراء بعيدة المدى ضمن الجيش البريطاني أثناء الحرب العالمية الثانية. ويُعتبر عموماً رائد استكشاف الصحراء، وهو صيت ناله لأنشطته في عقد الثلاثينيات. وتضمنت أنشطته أول عبور مسجل شرق-غرب عبر الصحراء الليبية (1932). كما خاض باگنولد الحرب العالمية الأولى. وقد وضع أساس أبحاث انتقال الرمال بالريح في كتابه المؤثر فيزياء الرمال المثارة والكثبان الصحراوية The Physics of Blown Sand and Desert Dunes (المنشور أول مرة في 1941؛ وأعادت دوڤر طبعه في 2005)، والذي مازال مرجعاً رئيساً في المجال. فعلى سبيل المثال، فقد استخدمتها ناسا في دراسة الكثبان الرملية على سطح المريخ.

وُلِد باگنولد في دڤون‌پورت، إنگلترة. والده، الكرنل آرثر هنري باگنولد (1854 - 1943) (المهندسون الملكيون)، وشارك في تجريدة الانقاذ 1884 - 1885 لانقاذ الجنرال گوردون في الخرطوم. وشقيقته كانت الروائية والكاتبة المسرحية إنيد باگنولد، التي كتبت في 1935 الرواية National Velvet.

جيولوجي إنگليزي، حجة في ميكانيكا حمل الرسوبيات والعمليات الريحية. فينما كان جندياً في الجيش البريطاني في مصر، قبل الحرب العالمية الثانية]]، درس لأول مرة تشكل غردان الرمال وحركتها. وبعد تقاعده من الجيش (1935)، واصل بحثه وكتب كتابه "فيزياء رمال الزوابع وغردان الصحراء"، الذي درس فيه فيزياء الجسيمات المتحركة في الغلاف الجوي والتي ترسـِّبها الرياج. وقد ميـِّز نوعين من الكثبان، الكثيب الهلالي، الذي سماه "برشان" والكثيب الخطي، الذي سماه "سيف". وفي ح.ع.2، اهتمامه بأداء المركبات على الرمال المثارة جهود الحلفاء في شمال أفريقيا.
