قضاء
السلطة القضائية Judiciary هي فرع الحكومة المسؤول عن التفسير الرسمي للقوانين التي يسنها المجلس التشريعي وينفذها الفرع التنفيذي أو يتم تبنيه بموجب اتفاقية دولية كما هو الحال في الدول الأعضاء في المجموعة الأوربية). في الحالات التي تنشأ فيها نزاعات متعلقة بمعنى هذه القوانين أو مشروعيتها أو انتهاكها المفترض. والسلطة القضائية مسؤولة أيضا عن اتخاذ القرارات بنتائج مثل هذه النزاعات مثل فرض العقوبات.
وفي معظم الدول المتقدمة سياسيا تتكون السلطة القضائية من قضاة مدربين مهنيا, أو في بعض الحالات منتخبين ولو بعض النظم تؤمن أيضا وجود أشخاص عاديين في هيئة المحكمة يتولون التقويم.
